Never had eyelash extensions applied before? Don’t worry! The Beauty & Brow Parlour are here to give you all the essential information you need. Lash extensions are a simple and easy way to enhance the look of your natural lashes. Saving you the trouble of having to apply mascara every day, extensions give you a naturally full look that really stands out.

What Are Lash Extensions?

Not all of us have the thick, luscious lashes we desire. Some of us are just born without, so, cosmetic lash extensions exist to bridge this gap. They can be easily attached by your beautician in order to achieve a more glamorous look.

The extensions themselves look like just regular eyelashes. They can be made from a number of different materials that often include:

  • Silk
  • Synthetic Materials (Acrylic)
  • Human Hair
  • Horsehair
  • Mink

Are Mink Lashes Made of Mink Fur?

While many believe these lash extensions come from the weasel-like animal, it’s simply not the case. The term “mink” here actually refers to a specific type of plastic called PBT (polybutylene terephthalate). It’s used mainly because of its high heat resistance and excellent shaping memory.

Why exactly are they called mink lashes then? Well, it’s most likely because of their ultra-soft texture that does indeed feel like the little mammal’s smooth fur.

How Are Lash Extensions Attached?

The fine nature of our lash hair means that this is quite a delicate and intricate job. A special waterproof adhesive is used to permanently attach the extensions to your existing lashes, ensuring they stay exactly where they’re meant to.

The process itself involves each extension individually being picked up with tweezers, dipped into the adhesive solution and then applied over the top of your natural eyelash. A procedure that can’t be rushed, more and more extensions are added, one by one, until the desired look is finally achieved.

The adhesive can last up to four weeks, depending on environmental factors. After that, they’ll fall out on their own.

It’s not recommended to try pulling them off yourself, as this can risk damaging your natural lashes and eyelids. If you’re in need of assistance, it’s always best to seek professional guidance.

Temporary Eyelash Extensions

If you’re looking for a less permanent solution than described above, there’s also the option of temporary eyelash extensions. Designed to be worn only once or twice, these short-term lashes are great for occasions where you just need a quick fix!

Are Extensions Bad For My Eyelashes?

As long as your beauty technician is following safe, hygienic, professional practices, there’s very little risk of experiencing any adverse effects to lash extensions. In extreme cases, there have been situations where individuals have developed traction alopecia (eyelashes falling out), however, this is usually only caused by inexperienced technicians applying the extensions improperly for very long periods of time.

It’s important to always choose a parlour with plenty of experience when it comes to any beauty procedure.

Is It OK To Wear Makeup To My Appointment?

No, you should attend your lash extension appointment with a clean face. This means:

  • No Mascara
  • No Eyeliner
  • No Eyeshadow

You want your extensions to bond properly with your natural lashes, and any other substances on them will negatively affect this process.
